Support after a disaster

After a disaster, several sources can help: the state, your insurer and associations. Here is how to activate them — plus a claim template to fill in and print.

🌍Compensation schemes differ by country: a dedicated public scheme in France (CatNat) and Spain (Consorcio); elsewhere, private insurance topped up by the EU Solidarity Fund.

1 · Natural-disaster recognition

For major events, an official decision must recognise the state of natural disaster to open compensation. Report the damage to your local authority, which forwards the request.

⏱️Once recognition is published, you usually have a set number of days to file with your insurer — check your local rules and your contract.

2 · File a claim with your insurer

Prepare your claim with this template. Keep it and attach photos and receipts.

Main damaged belongings

Next steps

File within the required time (phone, online account or letter).
Don't throw anything away before the loss adjuster's visit, unless it's a health risk (photograph it).
Keep invoices, photos and repair quotes.

3 · Public aid & associations

EU Solidarity Fund (major public damage, mobilised by the state).
Emergency social support from your municipality or region, depending on your situation.
Relief associations (Red Cross, civil protection): material help and emotional support.
