Protect, alert, rescue

The basic reflex, in this order.

  1. Protect: remove the danger if you safely can (cut the power, move away, mark the area).
  2. Alert: call 112. Say where, what happened, how many casualties and their condition. Don't hang up until told to.
  3. Rescue: give the appropriate care, following the operator's instructions if needed.

Unconscious but breathing โ€” recovery position

Not responding, but breathing normally.

  1. Check response (talk, gently shake the shoulders), then breathing for 10 seconds.
  2. Turn them onto their side (recovery position), head tilted back, mouth pointing down.
  3. Cover them, call 112 and monitor breathing until help arrives.

Not breathing โ€” resuscitation (CPR)

Unconscious and not breathing, or not normally.

  1. Have someone call 112 and fetch a defibrillator (AED).
  2. Push hard and fast on the centre of the chest: 5โ€“6 cm deep, 100โ€“120 times per minute, without stopping.
  3. As soon as an AED arrives, switch it on and follow its voice instructions.
  4. If trained: give 30 compressions then 2 rescue breaths.

Severe bleeding

Blood is flowing heavily and won't stop.

  1. Press immediately, hard and directly on the wound (clean cloth or your hand), without releasing.
  2. Lay the person down and call 112.
  3. If blood soaks through, add cloth on top without removing the first, and keep pressing.

Choking โ€” blocked airway

The person can no longer speak, cough or breathe.

  1. Give 5 firm back blows between the shoulder blades.
  2. If it fails: 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich). Alternate 5 back blows / 5 thrusts.
  3. Call 112. If the person becomes unconscious, start CPR.
  4. Infant: 5 back blows then 5 chest thrusts (never the abdomen).
