What to do: before / during / after
The right reflexes, whatever the hazard. Display it at home.
Before — get ready
- Know the risks in my area (official maps, local information)
- Prepare the 72-hour kit and family plan
- Locate the water and gas valves and the fuse box
- Sign up for local alerts if available
- Identify a shelter room (windowless if possible)
During — react
- Shelter according to the hazard (go upstairs for a flood, shelter indoors for a toxic cloud)
- Get information from official sources (public-service radio, mobile alert)
- Do not collect children from school: a safety plan applies
- Keep phone lines free; prefer text messages
- Shut off utilities if the authorities ask
After — recover
- Check on relatives and isolated neighbours
- Return home only once the authorities allow it
- Photograph damage and tell your insurer promptly
- Beware of tap water and flood-soaked food
- Ventilate, clean, discard anything contaminated
